Eric Lemelson started Lemelson Vineyards with the long view in mind, first planting vines in 1995 before investing in another 30 acres just two years later. With the release of the estate's inaugural vintage in 2001, Lemelson announced its arrival to the masses. The winery sits just a few minutes east of Carlton, the kind of sleepy wine country town that makes all of us consider packing up our lives and starting over there.
All of Lemelson’s estate vineyards are now certified organic but they’ve been farmed that way from the start. Still, they weren’t satisfied and knew that more could be done to ensure the winery’s environmental impact was as minimal as possible. The winery is equipped so that all winemaking functions operate strictly on gravity flow, guiding grapes to wine from the ground level of the facility down to its subterranean barrel cave, There, the wine matures slowly and elegantly until bottling.
