Reflecting on The 2023 Vintage: A Year To Remember

From Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023 looks like one of the best vintages in recent memory

As the 2024 grape harvest is in full swing, winemakers are eagerly anticipating another stellar year. But before we dive into this year's harvest, let’s take a moment to reflect on the remarkable 2023 vintage.

A Banner Year

According to wineinstitute.org, 2023 has been celebrated as an exceptional year for winemaking. Vintners are predicting that this vintage will be remembered as one of the finest in recent history. The year was marked by beautiful flavors, vibrant acidity, and remarkable balance.

The long growing season in 2023 was defined by an unusually cold and wet winter, including 10 inches of snow. This helped restore soil moisture while the vines were dormant, setting the stage for a fruitful year. The extra precipitation led to a higher yield overall—between 5-15% more for most varieties.

Pinot Noir, Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemakers across the board have noted balanced acidity with slower to develop sugar levels. Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, have shown exceptional quality with flavors that are truly off the charts. Winemakers have seen vintages with elegance and boldness, but the 2023 vintage has grace.

Karen MacNeil, author of *The Wine Bible*, echoed this sentiment, “Every century, every place has its legendary vintages. I have no doubt that 2023 will go down as one of the most phenomenal vintages ever in Napa Valley. Every vintner I’ve talked to about 2023 has been nothing short of ecstatic,” She noted.

A Legendary Vintage

As we celebrate the ongoing 2024 harvest, it’s clear that the legacy of the 2023 vintage will continue to be a benchmark for quality and excellence in winemaking. Cheers to the remarkable wines of 2023 and the promising new harvest ahead!
